8 DUEL

KaLeah stood on the dais of the empty throne room. It was where she had been standing the first time she saw Prince Nikolat.

She remembered the anxious fluttering in her stomach, the tightness of the red dress on her body, and the intensity of his gaze.

He hadn’t turned into a monster, she told herself. He had always been one and it just took her too long to see him for who he truly was. And she knew in less than a few hours, she would kill him on that marble floor.

She drew her sword and took a deep breath, trying to relax into the inevitability of her situation.

“Dragon spirits, guide my sword.”

She flexed out her arm, extending to look down the edge of her blade.

“Even though I wish Ash could just light him up in flames and send him back to Denlerack. That would be a lot easier, don’t you think?”

She didn’t know if Ash was there, but she addressed the dragon spirit as if she was, and then the spirit responded.

He will only keep coming back, as the dragon spirits did even after I sent them to different worlds.

KaLeah rolled her eyes. She wanted someone, anyone, but especially a magical creature to make this easier for her. KaLeah didn’t want to fight or kill the man she had experienced feelings for, even if she did hate him now.

The doors opened and Hilip walked through them. KaLeah felt an immediate shift in her own emotions and energy. There was an electric charge between them. Part of it was nervous attraction, some of it was frustration about him wanting to rescue her, and a little bit was her desire for him to take her away from all of this and indeed rescue her from what was coming.

“You are here early,” Hilip said, walking into the room and closing the doors behind him.

He was dressed in the crisp white uniform of a Belarone general and KaLeah looked him up and down, shamelessly admiring how fit and amazing he looked.

“I want to make sure we keep the crowd to a minimum,” he said, immediately getting down to business. She appreciated his battle-focused mind.

“We cannot have his men outnumbering our own, and since we don’t know who is and isn’t loyal, we need to limit the audience. I am also keeping townsfolk out of the castle gates.

“The word has spread fast, and we can’t have disgruntled foes trying to force their way in if they don’t like the outcome of this duel.”

KaLeah nodded, agreeing with all of the steps he was taking. He was clearly thinking more about this than she was. She wasn’t thinking further than her sword and the future pool of blood on the white marble tile.

She wanted to be more militant; more strategic. But she couldn’t shake a small sliver of fear and doubt that had begun to creep in the moment she’d seen Hilip.

He wanted to take her spot in the duel. Did that mean she wasn’t ready for this type of fight? She had grown up fighting the man who raised her.
